European law change

The European Commission has passed a bill restricting the use of monacolins, including monacolin K. Monacolin K is a biologically active compound formed when red yeast ferments rice. The recent change in law means that red yeast rice products containing 3 milligrams or more of monacolin K are banned and may no longer be sold. To date, the approved health claim has applied at an intake of 10 milligrams of monacolin K per day.

Why this legislative change?

The reason for this amendment is that in some cases side effects can arise from the use of products containing monacolin K from red yeast rice, such as muscle pain and stomach and intestinal complaints. These side effects are similar to those of statins, a drug commonly prescribed for lowering cholesterol levels. The European Commission is therefore of the opinion that intake of more than 3 mg of monacolins per day should be avoided.
